Abigail Burrows was a scholar at the Purcell School for nine years studying with Anna Pope and continued her musical education at the Royal College of Music with Susan Milan and later with Michael Cox. She was selected to perform for HRH Prince of Wales in a private concert at St James's Palace when she was twelve and made her concerto debut at London’s Royal Festival Hall aged fourteen. As a soloist and chamber musician, she has appeared at many prestigious venues including The Southbank Centre, Wigmore Hall, The Anvil, Birmingham Symphony Hall, Newport Riverfront Centre, St James's Piccadilly, Southwark Cathedral and Bridgewater Hall. She has performed at the Edinburgh, Fishguard and Windsor International Music Festivals and given concerts all over the world. In 2009, Abigail was the classical guest artist at a sell-out Jethro Tull concert at The Barbican Hall, performing a solo slot and a duet with the legendary rock-flautist, Ian Anderson.
As the winner of the Watford Concerto Competition, she toured Russia as a recitalist during their Rachmaninoff Festival and was invited back the following year to play as a soloist with the Novgorod Philharmonic Orchestra in their Stars of the 21st Century Festival. She has also toured Germany as a
guest solo artist with the 'New English Singers' for the Bach 250th Anniversary Celebration, performing in Hallé, Dresden, Berlin and Bach’s 'Thomas Kirche' in Leipzig. She has given concerts in Norway and Morocco and was selectedin 2011 to participate in the Sir James Galway International Masterclass and Convention in Switzerland. Last year she travelled to Kenya with the Concordia Foundation alongside the Lord Mayor of London's official visit, performing in concerts at the Braeburn Theatre, Muthaiga Country Club, and British High Commission, and running fife projects in schools, slums and orphanages.
Abigail has performed to members of the Royal Family at St James's Palace, Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace, and played at Southwark Cathedral in the presence of David Cameron and Boris Johnson, filmed by ITV1. She has been heard as a soloist on Classic FM and BBC World Service and featured on BBC1’s The Joys of Christmas and Songs of Praise. She also spent two years in a folk-rock band and appeared at festivals including Latitude and Glastonbury.
Abigail is a passionate outreach performer, workshop leader and teacher. She was a Live Music Now artist for four years, giving over 200 outreach concerts across the UK and is now a mentor and adjudicator for the scheme. She is a course tutor for Flute School London and has worked for Flutewise since 2005, as a contributor to their quarterly magazine and a tutor on their residential courses and Flute Days in the UK, Slovenia and Croatia.
A recipient of the prestigious Austin and Hope Pilkington Award, Abigail currently plays a handmade 9K Gold Brannen-Cooper flute. She is currently on a six month UK tour of The King & I and her debut CD, recorded at Champs Hill, is due for release later this year.
